BOPISBuy Online, Pick-up In Store

A fulfilment option where a customer buys online and collects the order from a physical store, blending digital and retail operations.

· Reviewed by senior engineers

BOPIS (Buy Online, Pick-up In Store) is the fulfilment model where a shopper places an order online and collects it from a physical store, usually within hours. Sister patterns include curbside pickup, click-and-collect and ship-from-store. The common thread is using store inventory and labour as fulfilment infrastructure instead of (or alongside) a central warehouse.

For retailers with stores, BOPIS is a margin lever. It cuts shipping cost, reduces split shipments, drives in-store footfall (and incremental purchases at collection), and lets you compete with two-day delivery without the logistics network. For shoppers, it offers same-day convenience and avoids delivery windows.

The technical lift is non-trivial. The website needs real-time inventory by store, accurate pick-and-pack capacity per location, a notification flow for customer and staff, and a store-side picking tool. Cancellations, partial fulfilment, transfers between stores and unhappy-path returns all need clean flows. Done badly, BOPIS creates the worst of both worlds — online conversion drops because inventory looks wrong, and store staff get blamed for failures upstream.

Devinsta builds omnichannel commerce features on Shopify POS, BigCommerce and custom stacks, with explicit attention to inventory accuracy, store-side UX and the failure modes that destroy customer trust faster than any feature wins it.
